Description
Initial market investigations which have been performed in 2004 (i.e. during the PNASTINA presence at Turku stone fair), indicate that honed and polished slabs of the Kvemo schist may have an interesting market potential in the Scandinavian countries, whilst the response at the Italian Verona Fair was more negative. Conclusions Dimensioned and honed slabs of the Kvemo schist may have an interesting market potential, at least in the Scandinavian countries. Large deposits of assumed good quality have been located both on the Norwegian and Swedish side of the border. The first priority for evaluating the possibility of increased future exploitation is a closer examination of the market possibilities. If this turn out positive, the next step will be closer examination of the quality of exploitable resources within the mapped deposit areas. Given these priorities, the Kvemo schist project will continue in 2005, partly within the framework of PNASTINA.
Location
Kvemo Schist is found as a distinct 10 km long layer, with a gentle (0-20 degrees) dip towards west. The thickness of the layer is a few hundred meters. Most part of the layer of schist is covered with till, and only a few per cent of the rock unit is visible on the surface as outcrops. Good quality schist is found at several levels within the schist unit. The schist displays a fine lamination defined by variations in grain size. The coarse-grained layers gives the assumed most attractive variety of the stone (shiny surface on polished slabs), whilst the fine-grained layers are more evenly grey and dull. Even though most localities exhibit both varieties, it is expected that some part of the deposit in average have a larger proportion of the former and most attractive type. In addition to the textural variations, quartz segregations can locally be a problem for mining, since frequent occurrences of such can increase the amount of waste rock (non-utilized rock) generated during quarrying. Based on the above mentioned criteria, three locations in Norway and one in Sweden are given the highest priority, i.e. should be consider further. These are: Myra, Kvernsteinsbruddet, Kvennfossen-Kvennvika-Hausvika and "Svensken" in Sweden.
