IV. Nogen bidrag til Hitterens og Smølens geologi

Abstrakt:
Forkortet: Hitra and Smøla (Map on p.6) are two rather large islands on the West coast of Norway at 63 1/2°N. Smøla belongs entirely to the coast plain of Norway and is remarkably low and flat. A great part of Hitra is also low but this island contains also some higher mountains. The smaller island of Frøya to the North of Hitra is also entirely a part of the coast plain but it is much more rugged than Smøla. The mainland to the South of the islands is Archaean, consisting chiefely of granite which has to a great extent been compressed so that it has assumed a gneissic appearance. Frøya, which consists of granite, and the northern part of Hitra, where gneissic as well as dioritic rocks occur, may also be Archaean. The rest of the islands consists of younger rocks. The geology is not much different from that of the Bergen coast described by the author in earlier publications, especially in "Bømmeløen og Karmøen 1888". We find great masses of deepseated eruptives, chiefly granite and typical dior- ite, and besides them on the island of Smøla an area (striated on the map) of tuffs and dykes. Small intrusive masses of more irregular shape, probably also surface sheets occur. In this area also some limestone strata are found. They contain fossils.
