The Knaben deposits were mined for molybdenum from 1885 to 1973. Three mines have been in operation, Knaben I, Knaben II and Kvina with a total production about 8.6 Mt. The major, Knaben II mine was operated nearly continuously in the period 1918–1973 and produced 8 Mt of ore with 0.2 % Mo. Knaben II was reopened in the 2007 and small-scale mining with an annual production of 50,000 t of ore yielding 100 t molybdenite is planned. Molybdenite occurs both in and along quartz veins and as dissemination in various gneisses, with minor amounts of chalcopyrite and pyrite. The most important mineralisations commonly occur concordantly in association with sulphide-bearing gneisses (‘Fahlband’), augen gneiss and grey gneisses, along a 6 km strike and 1 km width. In the upper part of the Knaben II deposit, molybdenite mainly occurs as dissemination and along joints or veinlets in grey granitic gneisses, while in the southern part of the deposit, molybdenite is mainly located along 1–20 cm thick quartz veins, within the grey granitic gneiss. Carbonate is common in the core of the veins. |
