The deposit is located about 300m SSW of the summit of Kaltberget mountain, at approximately 820m above sea level. From road to the Kvikne Quarries, an old cart track (Muskegg?) can be followed all the way up to the pit. When the first pitting activities occurred in the area is currently unknown. Sulfidmalm A/S sampled the locality in 1974, with promising results. After that, geological and geophysical maps were made, revealing a new locality about 50m N of the original pit. From 1975-1977, 17 cores were drilled (Sivertsen & Nixon 1976, Sivertsen 1977). The results show that the mineralization occurs in a 400H100m ultramafic body. The richest parts of cores contain 1-1.5wt% Ni and 0.1-0.3wt% Cu over a length of 3-5.5mm. The conclusion was that the mineralization was too small to be of economic interest. The pit comprises a 5m wide and 2m deep cut at the bottom of a 10-15m high ledge. At the top of the ledge, a quartz biotite schist containing carbonate dips 25E in direction 42E. The ledge itself consists of medium grained ultramafic gabbro; schist is again found 5-10 down. The ultramafite in the ledge is strongly deformed, with poorly developed schistosity and containing minor talc. It contains lumped aggregates and beads as well as disseminated pyrrhotite and minor amounts of chalcopyrite. The mineralized zone has a true thickness of about 1.5m. Similar mineralizations were sampled from the tailings at the steep down slope below the ledge (samples HE0153.01-.03). The ultramafic body is one of many related to the mafic metavolcanics of the Gula group (Nilsen & Mukherjee 1972, Nilsen 1987). A 10m long and 2m high bulge occurs at the E side of a peat bog, 50-60m N of the main pit. Pyrrhotite and minor chalcopyrite occur disseminated and as lumped aggregates in somewhat schistose ultramafite (sample HE0153.04). |

Geology of the Kvikne mines with special reference to the sulphide ore mineralization. |
;Norsk geologisk forening;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;Norsk geologisk tidsskrift; No.52 (2);151-192 pages |
Abstract: | |
The Kvikne group of mines and prospects lies within strongly folded metasediments and metavolcanics in the central Norwegian Caledonides. In general, the sulphide ore bodies are stratabound in nature, and have a ruler shape with parallel alignment and F2 linear structure. They occur adjacent to and at the border between a thin horizon of amphibolite (Gula greenstone) and calcsilicate bearing biotite schists (Gula schists). A short range metasomatism has affected the ore-bearing border zone bringing about a deprivation of lime and thereby a relative enrichment of Al, Mg and Si, giving rise to cummingtonite/anthophyllite-, garnet-, and quartz-bearing wall rocks. The ores have been broadly classified into pyrrhotitic ores and pyritic/chalcopyritic ores. A probable epigenic origin is suggested, depending on the trace element distribution and micromineralogy. |

Caledonian sulphide deposits and minor iron-formations from the southern Trondheim region, Norway. |
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;NGU; No.340;35-85 + k pages |
Abstract: | |
Within the southern and central parts of the Trondheim region of the Norwegian Caledonides a great number of small, stratabound cupriferous pyrite deposits are confined to mafic metavolcanics of the Gula, Støren and Fundsjø Groups of the Lower Palaeozoic succession. The deposits occuring within, or in close contact with the metavolcanics are characterized by their association with minor manganiferous oxide/silicate iron-formations - better known as "vasskis" ore type - within the metamorphic low-grade areas. The iron-fprmations of the metamorphic higher grade terrains on the other hand, which are extensively developed within the Gula Group, are mostly of a pyrrhotitic sulphide/silicate type and sulphurization processes are thought to have played an important role during the metamorphism. The pyrite deposits occurring adjacent to the metavolcanics bear no relationship to the iron-formations. They are embedded in pelitic, often carbonaceous assemblages (Gula Group) or within tuffitic members of the volcanogene Støren Group, and they are thought to represent re-sedimented (reworked) deposits. The pyrite deposits display varying degree of metamorphic reconstitution and a tectonic control has apparently determined their disc- or ruler-shaped morphology. |
