Grundtjern-dagbruddet, som ble drevet i perioden 1972 - 77, er ca. 800 m langt. Det er tatt ut 5.3 mill. tonn malm og 5.5 mill. tonn gråberg. Grundtjernmalmen ligger mellom Søstervannmalmen og Tverrdalen Nord, og dens stratigrafiske posisjon er noe usikker. Malmen består av en enkel malmhorisont, hengmalm med 31 % Fe magn., med steile sørlige foldeakser, dreiende vest mot dypet. En synformslukning mot øst underbygger teorien om at Grundtjernsmalmen danner en antiform av hengmalmsonen i Søstervannsmalmen. Malmen er noe oppsplittet av hornblendegneissoner, p.g.a. den kraftige N-S isoklinale foldefasen feltet er påvirket av. Heng og liggbergartene er hornblendegneis. I forbindelse med reevaluering for gjeoppstarting av Sydvaranger Gruve AS (http://www.sydvarangergruve.no/) i 2009 er forekomsten JORC-klassifisert, av Coffey Mining. Inferred Resources er beregnet til 3 millioner tonn med 34% total jern. Se http://www.northerniron.com.au/
