Lokaliteten ligger på den sydøstlige delen av Engeløya og tilhører et kalksteinsdrag som strekker seg fra Berg og ØNØ til forbi Røtnes over en strekning på 6-7 km. Karbonatdraget består av flere kalksteinsbenker atskilt av glimmerskifer. Bergartene i området stryker N70° Ø med fall ca. 50 ° syd. Kalkspatmarmoren er i hovedsak middels- til grovkornet og uren. Den er utpreget båndet med alternerende lyse- og mørke grå bånd. De mørke båndene er kraftig anriket på kvarts og glimmer noe som gjør at bergarten på vitrede flater har et riflet utseende. Karbonatdraget er splittet opp av tynne lag med glimmerskifer. Den er overalt gjennomsatt av uregelmessige slirer årer av sekundær kvarts. I myrkanten nedenfor gården Røtnes opptrer en sone med rød marmor av Leivset -typen Kalksteinen er for uren til at den kan utnyttes som industrikalk. |
