The 50 m long and 5 to 15 m wide disused quarry hosted in a K-feldspar-quartz pegmatite lens is located 200 m N of the village Lokøyna at the Lokøyna island. The pegmatite lens strikes E-W and occurs concordantly within dark grey biotite-rich gneisses with K-feldspar porphyroblasts (max. 2 cm). The pegmatite emplaced within the fold vertex. Ca. 75 vol.% of the pegmatite consists of massive K-feldspar which was the reason for the former mining activity. Quartz occurs as irregular veins and batches with a maximal extension of 2 x 2 x 4 m. The veins and batches are semi-parallel to the pegmatite contacts. Quartz is blear, grey to dark grey (smoky quartz) and is either left in the quarry walls or on heaps. Accessory biotite plates, 50 cm in length, are intergrown with garnet and occur in the central part of the pegmatite. Rare plagioclase crystals (<1 vol.% of the pegmatite) are developed at the contact of the pegmatite with the wall rock. |
