Abstract:
In the present paper a description is given of the limestone-deposits of the Archean coast-region of southern Norway which, geologically, is very little studied. The majority of these deposits are found in the district shown in the accompanying map, where the limestone is marked by figures. The limestone belong to a sedimentary series, which is the oldest rock-system in this part of the country. Into this have been intruded large massives of granites and other igneous rocks, that together with crust movements have greatly altered the limestones. They are now more or less coarsely crystalline, often with minerals such as mica, quartz, augite, scapolite, as very frequent constituents, sometimes as fairly large, well developed crystals. The deposits are generally very small and a great many lie rather far into the country. The best situated ones, generally also showing the best quality of limestone, are found in some very small islands in the coast district between Grimstad and Lillesand. The chemical character of the limestone may be seen from analyses cited. Generally a rather large amount of amterial insoluable in hydrochloric acid is found, furthermore a fairly small amount of magnesia. The amount of calcium carbonate in the large quantity of the limestones is less than 90%. The practical use that can be made of these rocks is therefore generally very limited.
