The Kåfjord deposit is the biggest Cu-vein deposit within the Alta–Kvænangen Window and is hosted by tholeiitic lavas and volcaniclastic rocks with minor gabbroic sills and beds of graphitic schist and carbonate of the Kvenvik Formation. The Kåfjord mine commenced production in 1827 and was closed down in 1878. In the years 1843–1878 around 62,000 t of cobbed ore with around 5 % Cu was produced. Regular production was carried out again in the period 1895–1908, and total production was about 5,000–6,000 t of metallic copper. The Cu mineralisation at Kåfjord occurs as quartz-carbonate veins in brecciated metagabbro and metabasalts. Several irregular veins, which are 100–350 m long and 0.5–4 m thick, have been exploited over an area around 2.5 km in a N-S direction. The veins mainly comprise quartz, calcite and ferrous dolomite. The sulphides chalcopyrite and pyrite occur as clusters and dissemination, also haematite and magnetite are locally present. |
