Marmorsonene melom Sørfold og Saltfjellet har vært utnyttet i natursteins-
sammenheng i mer enn 100 år, og flere ulike marmortyper finnes i området.
Rapporten gir en beskrivelse av de viktigste marmortyper og hvor de opptrer,
og en vurdering av hvilket natursteinpotensiale som eksisterer for ulike
marmortyper.
Det antas at området har størst uutnyttet potensiale for hvit-grå og grå
kalkspatmarmor. Videre finnet et mulig potensiale for fargebåndet marmor,
men i første rekke "platemarmor". Det antas at mulighetene til å finne nye
forekomster av "Fauskemarmor" er små, men enkelte beslektede typer av konglo-
meratisk marmor kan ha et visst potensiale. |

The Fauske conglomerate represents a rather rare case of a monomict carbonate conglomerate in the Late Neoproterozoic to Silurian, lithostratigraphic successions of the Norwegian Caledonides. Lithological varieties of this conglomerate unit from the Løvgavlen quarry have a highly decorative quality and are well known in both domestic and international markets under trading names such as 'Norwegian Rose', 'Jaune Rose*, 'Noewegain Green','Antique Fonce' and 'Hermelin'. The Fauske conglomerate is a 60 m-thick unit which rests on either dark grey ('blue') calcite marbles or white dolomite marbles. The latter are jointed and fragmented, and also appear as sedimentary collapse- breccia and debris where they are in direct contact with the conglomerate. Although the Fauske conglomerate has been involved in two main pulses of Caledonian tectonic deformation, which produced an early, syn-metamorphic flattening of the clasts and a later folding or rotation of clasts into a spaced cleavage, the overall sedimentary features are still remarkably well preserved. |

The most important quarries are found in the Iddefjord, South of Halden on the Swedish Frontier, where excellent granite occurs in inexhaustable abundance. Larvik the famous labradorizing augite syenite (Larvikite) occurs, whilst round the coast - at Arendal, Bergen and Trondheim gneiss granite is quarried. Anker, the marble firm at Saltfjorden in Nordland, exports marble to European countries and to America, where this marble has been used in the New York Life Insurance Co'.s building, The University Club, The Manhattan Club, The Bank of England in Montreal, Morgan's new house etc. Quarries in steatite are mentioned on p.18. Tectonic structural features of the Fauske conglomerates in the Løvgavlen quarry, Nordland, Norwegian Caldedonides, and regional implications |

|
A quarry excavated in a multilayered, carbonate conglomerate formation of apparent Cambrian age in the Fauske Nappe of the Uppermost Allochthon, Nordland, provides evidence for three principal phases of Caledonian deformation. The 60 m-thick Fauske conglomerates are characterised by a rapid, vertical facies change from carbonate debris and carbonate breccia to rhythmite conglomero-breccia and graded calcareous greywacke. The carbonate clasts were deposited from southeast-directed turbidity currents on the palaeoslope of a basin that deepened to the southeast. Both the basin physiography and the palaeocurrent directions are oppsite with respect to features to be expected along the former Baltoscandian margin of Baltica. The earliest tectonic structures are NW-directed, ramp-and-flat thrust faults and fault-bend folds, that progressed into a higher-strain regime involving clast flattenning and elongation, and the development of an amphibolite-facies schistosity, S1. The early staircase thrusts and folds therefore record a tectonic reversal of the basinal regime, as well as documenting an opposite structural vergence with respect to thrust-sheet assembly during Scandian orogenesis. The early structures are overprinted by SE-verging folds and small-scale thrusts, and a penetrative, NW-dipping, S2 cleavage. Later minor structures are mainly extensional. The combined palaeodepositional and early structural picture is highly reminiscent of the geological development taht has been recorded along the Laurentian margin of the Iapetus Ocean in Cambro-Ordovician time, involving an extensive carbonate shelf and adjacent slope-and-rise. We postulate thet the Fauske conglomerates originated along that former passive margin. Valnesfjord kalkfelt; på anmodning fra bergmesteren i det Nordlandske berg- mesterembede ble det utført en sonderende undersøkelse av et kalksteins- felt i Valnesfjordområdet. Undersøkelsene omfattet geologisk kartlegging og sonderende overflateprøvetaking. De geologiske kart som finnes over om- rådet viser et mektig kalksteinsdrag som strekker seg fra Skjerstadfjorden i syd til Sørfold i nord. Etterhvert viste det seg at draget i virkeligheten var splittet opp i mindre soner med mellomliggende soner av glimmerskifer, kvartsitt og kvartsittskifre. Kvaliteten på de forskjellige kalksteinssonene er sterkt varierende og jevnt over meget dårlig. Det eneste område som kan tenkes å få en økonomisk utnyttelse ligger syd for R80. "Løvgavlmarmor"; NGU's Nord-Norge-prosjekt mottok en henvendelse fra Fauske kommune, med anmodning om en nyvurdering av reservene av den røde Løvgavl- marmoren. Man var særlig opptatt av spørsmålet om denne marmorressursen er begrenset og om den bare finnes i det området som allerede er kjent. Undersøkelsene viste at den røde Løvgavlmarmoren er en begrenset ressurs og at dens opptreden som økonomisk utnyttbar blokkstein er knyttet til den kollen hvor det idag er drift. |
