The Ørsdalen W-Mo deposit was intermittently mined in the period 1904 to 1954. It is assumed that about 33.000 tonnes of crude wolfram-ore have been mined and yielded 105 tonnes of concentrate (in average 60-65 % WO3) corresponding to 66 tonnes of contained 100 % WO3 (Bjørlykke 1952, 1953). In addition, about 32 tonnes of contained 100 % MoS2 was produced in the first mining periods until 1918. Mining was carried out in open pits on top of a mountain plateau (750 m.a.s.l.) and in adits in the upper part and in the valley bottom (150 m.a.s.l.) of a steep cliff. Bjørlykke (1953) has given resource estimation of 38 000 tonnes of calculated ore (0,35 % WO3) and probable ore 105 000 tonnes, whereas Sandberg (1953) has given resource estimation of 45.000 tonnes calculated ore (0,42 % WO3) and probable ore 120.000 tonn (0,4 % WO3). The mineralisation occurs in two NW-SE trending, steeply dipping NE, parallel zones, up 100 m wide, comprising biotite-hornblende gneiss and porphyritic granite within granitoid orthogneiss. Wolframite and scheelite, as well as molybdenite is located within and along quartz veins within the mafic gneiss and along contacts between the gneisses and granite. Disseminations and veinlets of W-minerals mainly occur in the mafic gneiss. |

Abstract: | |
The tungsten and molybdenite deposit in the area has been dealt with earlier by the author; this paper deals with the general geology, petrology and rock metamorphism of the region. After the regional geology has been briefly described, the paper deals with the petrographical classification of the rocks exposed. These are amphibolites and two types of quartzo-feldspathic gneisses. Then follows a short description of the rock structures. It is shown how a heavy folding of orogenic nature has effected all the rocks and it is concluded that they must have reacted to the folding in a plastic way. A chapter where the metasomatic processes are discussed follows next and the conclusions reached are that the one kind of the gneisses may have originated through metasomatism of anorthositic rocks while strong evidence is that the other has been formed by replacement of amphibolites and related rocks. The metasomatism is belived to be synkinematic. The metamorphism is dealt with at some length and it is shown that all the rocks must once have belonged to granulite facies, which is also the PT conditions during which the metasomatism took place. Later a retrograde metamorphism has affected the rocks within certain zones which are believed to represent tectonical zones of weakness. A map showing the metamorphic situation of the area is presented and here a division of the rocks into three groups according to differences in metamorphism is undertaken. These are: high amphibolite facies (including granulite facies), low amphibolite facies, epidote amphibolite- and greenschist facies. It is shown how a division of the rocks into one of these three groups can be based upon variations in the minerals of the quartzo-feldspathic gneisses alone. The paper ends with some considerations upon the relative age of the Telemark and Egersund formations of pre-Cambrian rocks. Based on the |

The Ørsdalen tungsten deposit. |
;Norsk geologisk forening;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;Norsk geologisk tidsskrift; No.35 (1-4);69-85 pages |
Abstract: | |
The general geology and the type of mineralization are shortly discussed, and the different ore minerals occurring are described. The minerals show a zoning opposite to what is generally considered the rule. Special attention is directed to the tungsten minerals (wolframite and scheelite) and it is shown how wolframite is altered into scheelite. This process is ascribed to a Ca metasomatism, probably brought about by late hydrothermal solutions reacting with the already formed wolframites. Experimental work has proved this reaction to go rather quickly. In the field this process is connected in time with other processes traceable in the history of the rocks. The formation of the ore is very briefly discussed. |

;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;NGU; No.217;1-134 pages |
Abstract: | |
The ore fields and individual deposits which are mentioned in the text are shown on the map, figure 2. For those areas where the deposits lie so close together that they cannot be shown separately on this map, detail maps have been drawn on larger scales. In the descriptions there will also be found special maps covering the most important molybdenum areas. An index of the deposits which are mentioned is arranged both alphabetically and according to the numbers on the map. The majority, including the most important, of the ore deposits in Southern Norway lie within a marked zone, which is shown on the map, figure 3. At varying periods of time different metals have characterised the long zone of ore deposits: titanium in the southwest, then molybdenum in the area from Gursli to Knaben, copper and molybdenum in Telemark, silver, zinc and lead from Kongsberg eastwards, and further to the east, molybdenum again. From the map, figure 4, it can be seen that the most important groups of deposits are situated to both sides of the granite-gneiss area of the mountanious region of Southern Norway and that they lie in migmatised gneisses along the southwest side and in the schists and quartzites of the Telemark supracrustal suite along the northeast side. |

Geologiske og geokjemiske undersøkelser rundt Ørsdalen W-Mo forekomst. |
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;FAGRAPPORT;NGU-rapport; No.1750/51A;34 pages |
Abstract: | |
Videre boring her vil bli vanskelig og kostbar p.g.a utilgjengelig terreng.
