The mining area is located in a small valley between a smaller bay and the road on the E side of Lysefjorden, at approximately 2km N of the bridge at Lysefjordbrua. Particularly NW of the area, slopes are very steep. Today, extraction pits extend over 200m in NE-SW direction. Probably, the northernmost of the original mining area is now covered by road base materials. Substantial egalisation of the tailings heaps and backfilling of shafts has been done over the past decades. The main tailings heap today serves as a parcel for a newly built residence and ore chunks have been used for a garden fence. A garage has been put in front of the adit. Older reports provide no clear conclusion on when the deposit was in production, but there appear to have been three separate periods. The deposit supposedly was first identified in 1747, and Enighetens Kobberverk started in 1764. Production seems to have been continuous for 8-10 years, with deliveries to the smelter at Hjelmelandsvågen that produced 18.000 thaler for Bergen municipality. The next production periods around 1870 and 1880 saw interest from English and Belgian investors respectively. Around WWI (late 1910's), some tradesmen from Stavanger showed interest in the deposit. Geographical coordinates apply to the center of the main extraction area, consisting of a 50m long adit in the SW, continuing with a 30m long cut towards the NE at 040. Smaller shafts have been driven at 35m and 55m further NE. Two shafts in the main adit have been backfilled with large blocks. According to aged reports, the extraction seems to have been driven at 45m along the fall with a maximum width of 10m. The country rock in the area is characterized as banded gneiss with alternating medium grained quartz-feldspar and finer grained bands containing hornblende up to 0.3m thick. The orientation of the banding is variable from 190-215E, but with a constant fall of 45E towards WSW. Nearby road cuts reveal isoclinal folding of the entire sequence. The sulphide mineralization is connected to 1-3m wide band with medium to fine grained leuconorite/gabbro at small angles with the gneiss banding. Pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite occur in variable amounts both disseminated, in bands and veins. Less pronounced mineralization also occurs in the gneiss and seems related to later pegmatite veins (0.1-0.5m) and quartz mobilisates. At the NE entrance of the adit, the ore zone is 0.1-0.3m thick (sample 01). The zone is irregularly shaped but follows norite orientation. Outside the SW adit entrance, several ore zones occur up to 0.5m thick oriented 230/050 (sample 02). The most common mineralization on the tailings is ore of disseminated type and veins with pyrrhotite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite in fine grained gabbroic rock (sample 05), whereas massive pyrrhotite (sample 06) and pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite (sample 07) ores occur as well. Veins and bands containing comparatively pure chalcopyrite occur in silicified gabbro near pegmatite veins (sample 08). The locality farthest N consists of a 3H3m vertical shaft in medium grained gabbro, containing a single pegmatite vein (10-15cm) oriented 260/060, virtually parallel to the ore zone. Massive ore wasn¿t found; moderate to weakly disseminated mineralization and veins with chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-pyrite occur in fine grained mafic host (sample 04). Weak sulphide dissemination and major magnetite lumps occur in the pegmatite (sample 03). |

Abstract: | |

Abstract: | |

;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;FAGRAPPORT;Bergarkivet; No.BA 1715;9 pages |
Abstract: | |
