Abstract |
Test mining was carried out in the Vakkerlien deposit in the southern part of the area in the 1870s. It consists of a cigar shaped ore body with chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The main host for the mineralizations is a metagabbroic rock, partly ultramafic surrounded by calcareous biotite-rich schists cross-cut by trondhjemitic veins. Exploration was conducted by Sulfidmalm AS from 1974, later also by Folldal Verk and since 2004 by Sulfidmalm and Falconbridge/Blackstone Ventures including core drilling. Blackstone has published reserves of 400,000 t with 1 % Ni, 0.4 % Cu. |

The deposit is located down on the southern slope of the Vakkerlifjell mountain; a well-kept maintenance road for the power station in Innerdalen runs across it. The maintenance road exits from main road 3 at Kleiva, about 3km south of Yset; the deposit is located some 6km from the exit. The area is largely covered. The ore body crops out circa 200m north of the road on the north side of a peat bog. Two smaller pits with at 7m apart and a lesser one, partly overgrown, have been dug out ESE of this. These pits were supposedly operated in the 1870's and the main cut not before the 1900's, presumably by Røstvangen (Egge 1913). Extensive investigations were committed by Sulfidmalm A/S from 1974-1977, including geological mapping, geophysical measurements (VLF:CP, magnetometry, Slingram, Turam), and drilling (>100 cores). Additional geophysical measurements and core extraction (101 cores, 3400m) were done by Folldal Verk A/S in the years 1991 and 1992. The main host for the mineralizations is a metagabbroic rock, partly ultrabasic surrounded by calcareous biotite-rich schists cross-cut by trondhjemitic veins. The main gabbro body has been sampled (1200m) parallel to the regional NW-SE lineation dipping slightly SE. The ore crops out towards the NW end of the metagabbro. SE in the area, a very weakly mineralized second gabbro body parallel to the main gabbro crops out. One interpretation is that those metagabbro lenses are connected and that the mineralizations are occur along a fold hinge closing towards the NW. The sulphide mineralization form an oblong lenticular body (ie. a cigar) in the center of the main gabbro. The most common sulphides are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite with minor pyrite. Pentlandite occurs as separate grains in massive sulphide veins (a few centimetres wide), thinner veins and as isolated grains. With a cut-off grade at 0.4wt% Ni, the lenticular ore body is 1-6m thick and 15-45m wide, dipping 0E-20E SE. The E wall of the W pit shows the ore zone with 0.5m thickness in a medium grained, somewhat discoloured metagabbro with a foliation oriented at 310E/15E. Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite occur both disseminated and in thin veins (sample .01), defining the most common ore type found in the tailings. Around the eastern pit, the rocks are strongly altered, but the main ore body was found to be oriented at 340E. Samples from the tailings show that pyrrhotite, pentlandite and variable amounts of chalcopyrite occur in 1-2cm wide massive bands (.03) and as veinlets, lumped aggregates and as disseminated grains (.04). Sample .05 comprises a collection of specimen sample from the tailings heap, which is estimated to have a volume of 50m3. A series of model calculations have been done by Folldal Verk A/S. Based upon 1970's data from A/S Sulfidmalm, the in-situ ore reserve is shown at 310.000 tonne, containing 1.20wt% Ni and 0.44 wt% Cu, with a cut-off grade for Ni at 0.4wt% (Killi et al 1991). Revised calculations based upon the more recent assessments in 1991 and 1992 with a more conservative cut-off grade of 0.5wt Ni give 124.000 tonne with 1.96wt% Ni and 0.60wt% Cu (Killi & Juhava 1992), and 105.000 tonne with 1.73wt% Ni and 0.55wt% Cu, respectively (Heim & Hultim 1993). The deposit is considered as a well documented resource. Blackstone Ventures Inc., holding the rights to the deposit through Sulfidmalm AS, published in 2007 on their website reserves to be 400 000 t @ 1% Ni, 0.4% Cu. |

Caledonian sulphide deposits and minor iron-formations from the southern Trondheim region, Norway. |
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;NGU; No.340;35-85 + k pages |
Abstract: | |
Within the southern and central parts of the Trondheim region of the Norwegian Caledonides a great number of small, stratabound cupriferous pyrite deposits are confined to mafic metavolcanics of the Gula, Støren and Fundsjø Groups of the Lower Palaeozoic succession. The deposits occuring within, or in close contact with the metavolcanics are characterized by their association with minor manganiferous oxide/silicate iron-formations - better known as "vasskis" ore type - within the metamorphic low-grade areas. The iron-fprmations of the metamorphic higher grade terrains on the other hand, which are extensively developed within the Gula Group, are mostly of a pyrrhotitic sulphide/silicate type and sulphurization processes are thought to have played an important role during the metamorphism. The pyrite deposits occurring adjacent to the metavolcanics bear no relationship to the iron-formations. They are embedded in pelitic, often carbonaceous assemblages (Gula Group) or within tuffitic members of the volcanogene Støren Group, and they are thought to represent re-sedimented (reworked) deposits. The pyrite deposits display varying degree of metamorphic reconstitution and a tectonic control has apparently determined their disc- or ruler-shaped morphology. |
