The deposit was in production from 1872-1886 with a short break in the late 1870's. During the 1880's, the deposit has been leased by the English company of Vivian & Co, which worked the deposit until 1886. Production was ceased because the ore body was found to wedged out further down. The deepest shaft is 62m, and there is supposedly still ore even at the deepest level. From 1880-1886, 48.000 tonnes of ore were smelted. Altogether, 109.000 tonnes were produced, with an average Ni content of 0.9wt% and Cu content of 0.4wt%. The mine entrance is about 60x15m, water table is about 15m lower. According to Bugge 1935, the ore body is cigar shaped with dimensions 60x13m. In the upper part, the ore body stands steep whereas further down it dips at 45E towards S. The ore consists of semi-massive pyrrhotite, pyrite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite in a medium grained gabbro. Samples 01-04 were all collected at the tailings; sample 04 is a collection. Massive sulphide was also collected from the tailings (sample 05). About 800m E at 100m a.s.l., at UTM coordinates 585100 7701980, a 10m long adit with a 20m3 tailings heap has been driven towards N. The gabbro is only mineralized at the adit entrance, with a 2-3m thickness, consisting of weak impregnation with pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite (sample 06). Six holes up to almost 200m deep were drilled by Store Norske Gull in 2008: The cores did not reveal new mineralization of significance but gave information relevant to the assessment of the potential of the Hamn area. Olivine (forsterite)-rich cumulates in the Hamn complex are uniformly depleted in Ni - to a level of ca. 600 ppm, which clearly suggests that the magma had already been partially depleted in Ni prior to the crystallization of these cumulates. This episode of sulphur saturation may be the one that formed the Hamn mineralization or may have led to formation of sulphides in a lower-crustal level magma chamber part of which may be the mineralization seen at the surface. |

Abstract: | |
