The Andørja deposit was discovered around 1910, but most extensive exploration was carried out by Christiania Spigerverk A/S in the years 1957-1963. Totally, 125 holes with a total length of 14 147 m have been drilled. Test beneficiation was carried out both in 1991-92 and 1998-99, but the iron (superslig) concentrate was not found suitable for special products as in the Rana area. The banded iron ore occurs within a 70-180 m thick amphibolite, probably a metavolcanic rock, and comprises several ore lenses and beds that are between 3-20 m thick. Locally, they are closely located and could be mined together over 50 m thickness. The average Fe content is 25 % total Fe, with 18 % magnetic Fe and 1 % P. Magnetite is the only iron oxide observed in the ore. Common gangue minerals are hornblende, oligoclase, biotite, quartz, and locally some garnet. Total tonnage is estimated to 70 Mt.

Rapporten er en søknad om bidrag på kr. 30.000,- fra Statens Tiltaks- kommisjon til separasjon og anrikningsforsøk med jernmalm fra Andørja fra interessentselskapet "Malmmineraler" Bergen. Rapporten (søknaden) har som bakgrunnsstoff omfattende sitering/sammendrag fra tidligere rapporter av J. Johansson (1916), Ths Munster (1917) og J. H. L. Vogt (1917). Disse rapportene gir alle en økonomisk- geologisk beskrivelse og vurdering av malmfeltene. Til slutt i nærværende rapport begrunnes søknaden om bidrag detaljert.
