The Caledonian mountain chain of the Southern Troms and Ofoten areas. Part I. Basement rocks and Caledonain meta-sediments.
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;NGU; No.239;1-162 + ka pages
Abstract:
The geology of the present area will be treated in a series of three publications. In the first paper the petrography and general features of the Precambrian rocks and the so-called "basal gneisses" are described and the interrelations of these rocks are discussed. In addition, description and comments on the stratigraphy, petrography and metamorphism of the Caledonian meta-sediments are presented. It is shown that chemical, mineralogical and general structural relations point to a close relationship between the Precambrian Rombak window and the basal massif of Tysfjord. Thrust sheets of Precambrian granite in the Caledonian schist within the Rombak profile and the Hinnøy area are described. These observations support the hypothesis of Kautsky that gneiss-granite layers in schists of the Tysfjord area as well as the border gneiss of the Tysfjord granite are thrust sheets of Caledonized Precambrian rocks. The presence of thrust planes at several levels within the Caledonian metasediments renders the original stratigraphy uncertain. The sequence is divided into the following groups, in ascending order: Hyolithes Zone, Storfjell Group, Rombak Group, Narvik Group, Salangen Group Niingen Group (Table III).

The Caledonian Mountain Chain of the Southern Troms and Ofoten areas. Part II. Caledonian rocks of igneous origin.
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;NGU; No.261;1-110 + pl pages
Abstract:
Metamorphosed rocks of igneous origin are described from Caledonian part of the Southern Troms and Ofoten areas. Based on megascopic and microscopic appearance, on chemistry and on field relations they can be divided into two separate groups whose age and geologic history differ from each other: The first group comprises serpentinites, amphibolites, meta-trondhjemites and metamorphozed quartz keratophyres. It is suggested that these rocks represent early peridotite intrusions, basalts, gabbros, basalt tuffs and tuffites, trondhjemite intrusives, and quartz keratophyre pytoclastics and lavas, respectively, all rocks having been metamorphosed by progressive regional metamorphism occurring during the Caledonian orogeny. Their mineral assemblages are generallly in good accordance with the distribution of metamorphic facies as this is revealed by the writer's previous investigations in adjoining metasediments. This first group represent the initial Caledonian magmatism in the area, largely belonging to the geosynclinal stage. The second group of igneous rocks includes ultrabasics (peridotites and troctolites), norites, gabbros, diorites, granodioritic and granitic rock types (to a smaller extent also trondhjemites). These rocks were only to a small degree altered by metamorphic processes.

Undersøkelse av mineralske råstoffer i Nord-Norge. Befaring av industrimineralforekomster i Troms og Nordland fylker.
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;FAGRAPPORT;NGU-rapport; No.939 G;61 pages
Abstract:

Abstract:
The geological map Narvik, published in 1950, is briefly described. The bedrock of this map area can be subdivided into autochthonous and allochthonous rocks. The autochthonous rocks comprise the Precambrian (mainly the Rombak window) and overlying conglomerate and sandstone of supposed Lower Cambrian age. An angular unconformity separates the Precambrian from Lower Cambrian. The allochthonous, Caledonian sequence can be subdivided into three thrust units. The main part of this sequence is probably Cambro-Silurian in age, but slices of deformed Precambrian granite occur at the base of the middle unit. Metamorphism of the allochthonous sequence took place in the epidote-amphibolite and almandine-amphibolite facies (up to kyanite grade). A chapter on the economic geology of the area and an excursion guide are included.
