The kyanite quartzite of Sormbrua is one of the four major occurrences of kyanite quartzites in the Solør area. The deposit is hosted in Middle to Upper Proterozoic fine- to medium-grained granitic gneisses of the Solør Complex. The granitic gneisses are assumed to have ages of 1.6 to 1.8 Ga. (Nordgulen 1999). The Sormbrua deposit is situated in a dome-like gneiss structure, close (5 to 10 km) to the rocks of the NNW-SSE striking units of the "Oslofield" in the west. The units of the "Oslofield" comprises here metarhyolites, metatuffs and monzodioritic augengneiss. The deposit is in close relationship with metagabbros and fine-grained amphibolites (hyperites). The fine-grained kyanite quartzite with blue nests of kyanite and lazulite (up to 1 cm) is exposed below the old bridge Sormbrua of the old state road, 18 km SE of Elverum. The exposure is at the SW edge of the S-shaped 3 km long kyanite quartzite body. The outcrop was first described by Nystuen (1969). In other parts the kyanite quartzite is not exposed and was mapped by Jakobsen and Nielsen (1977) using the distribution of kyanite quartzite blocks. The Al2O3 content of the Sormbrua deposit varies between 13 and 18 wt.%. Accordingly the SiO2 content is higher with 77 to 81 wt.%. Nystuen (1969) stated kyanite concentrations of 10 to 15 vol.% with kyanite crystals up to 3 cm in length from Sormbrua. The average crystal size of the slightly elongated quartz crystals is 0.226 mm (200 measurements). The rock contains accessory rutile, pyrite, zircon, muscovite and/or pyrophyllite, wavellite, topaz, lazulite, barite, apatite and aluminium-strontium-phosphates (Müller et al. 2005).

Norwegian kyanite quartzites - potential resources of high purity quartz?
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;RAPPORT;NGU-rapport; No.2005.039;70 s. pages
Abstract:
Forkortet: This study represents an evaluation of Norwegian kyanite quartzite occurrences as potential deposits of high purity quartz raw material. Kyanite quartzites are rare fine-grained with 70 to 85 vol. % quartz and > 15 vol. % kyanite (Al2SiO5) which occur in Proterozoic supracrustal rock units. Kyanite quartzites form stratiform lens-shaped bodies, which can extend several kilometers.

Kyanittførende kvartsitt i Elverum-Våler, en mulig ekvivalent til Horrsjøbergets kvartsitt?
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;NGU; No.258;237-240 pages
Abstract:
A kyanite-bearing quartzite occurs in Precambrian gneisses at the river Sørma, 18 km southeast of Elverum, Hedmark, Southern Norway. An erratic boulder of kyanite-quartzite containing lazulite, rutil and svanbergite in Nord-Odal (Bryn, 1962) may have been derived from this quartzite horizon. These finds indicate a possible correlation of the quartzite at Sørma with the petrographic similar rock in Horrsjøberg, Värmland, Sweden.
