The kyanite quartzite of Gullsteinberget is one of the four major occurrences of kyanite quartzites in the Solør area. The deposit is hosted in Middle to Upper Proterozoic fine- to medium-grained granitic gneisses of the Solør Complex. The granitic gneisses are assumed to have ages of 1.6 to 1.8 Ga. (Nordgulen 1999). The deposit is in close relationship with metagabbros and fine-grained amphibolites (hyperites). The Gullsteinberget deposit is situated 35 km SW of Elverum and about 6 km north of the state road 206 between Flisa and the border to Sweden. The deposit was identified and mapped by Jakobsen and Nielsen (1977). It is the largest known kyanite quartzite deposit in this area with a length of 1.8 km and a width of up to 300 m. The lens-shape body strikes NE-SW and form the mountain ridge of the Gullsteinberget (516 m a.s.l.). The lens dips 50 to 60° to NW. Kyanite-rich layers alternate in m-scale with pyrophyllite-quartzite and minor biotite gneiss intercalations. The concentration of SiO2 of a representative sample from the Gullsteinberget deposit is 76.1 wt.% and of Al2O3 17.7 wt.% determined by XRF. According to Jakobsen and Nielsen (1977) the average content (37 samples) of quartz from the Gullsteinberget kyanite quartzite is about 75 wt.%, of kyanite 22.9 wt.% and of rutile 0.18 wt.%. The quartz crystals have an average crystal size of 0.496 mm (200 measurements). Kyanite crystals are commonly embedded in pyrophyllite and muscovite. Barite is a common accessory mineral. Kyanite plates are about 480 µm in length and they are commonly altered to muscovite and to sericite along grain boundaries and trans-granular cracks. Al in quartz from the Gullsteinberget kyanite quartzite varies from 22 to 31 ppm (3 LA-ICP-MS analyses) and Ti from 5 to 16 ppm. Li, Be, B, Mn, Ge, K, Ca and Fe are generally below the limit of detection.

The Gullsteinberget and Knøsberget kyanite quartzite deposits
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;RAPPORT;NGU-rapport; No.2006.078
Abstract:
Confidential until 01.01.2009 The kyanite quartzite occurrences of Gullsteinberget and Knøsberget in Solør were mapped, sampled and analysed in order to determine the quality and distribution of potential quartz raw material. From the field mapping three potential bodies could be identified: (1) a 50 x 20 m, NE-SW striking body ca. 100 m ESE of the Gullsteinberget top, (2) a 50 x 40 m, NE-SW striking kyanite quartzite lens in the central part of the Gullsteinberget West target area and (3) a 50 x 10 m, NE-SW striking lens at Knøsberget. The average grain size of quartz is 0.5 to 1.3 mm at Gullsteinberget East (body 1), 0.5 – 1.0 mm at Gullsteinberget West (body 2) and 0.2 to 0.4 mm at Knøsberget (body 3). On the basis of these field observations a 400-kg sample were taken from body 2 for a processing test.

Norwegian kyanite quartzites - potential resources of high purity quartz?
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;RAPPORT;NGU-rapport; No.2005.039;70 s. pages
Abstract:
Forkortet: This study represents an evaluation of Norwegian kyanite quartzite occurrences as potential deposits of high purity quartz raw material. Kyanite quartzites are rare fine-grained with 70 to 85 vol. % quartz and > 15 vol. % kyanite (Al2SiO5) which occur in Proterozoic supracrustal rock units. Kyanite quartzites form stratiform lens-shaped bodies, which can extend several kilometers.
