The Toppan iron formation is assumed to be a northwards extension of the Sjåfjell IF. The trenches described by Foslie (1949) were not discovered, but the IF could be studied in minor outcrops close to the top of the hill where the bedrock is dominated by rusty, garnet-bearing mica schist. Concordant to sub-concordant quartz veins are common within the schist. Only 50-60 cm thick sequence of iron formation is exposed, and is underlying the mica schist. Stratigraphically, 3-4 m below occur similar mica schist. The IF comprises magnetite and quartz in a few mm to 1 cm thin bands (Sample JSFE1415). |
