The Dunderlandsdalen iron district comprises a number of smaller and larger hematite-magnetite ore deposits, of which the Ørtfjell deposit is currently in production. Other mines which now are closed are: Finnkåteng (produced 10.7 Mt with 37.4 % Fe), Vesteråli (14.6 Mt with 35.3 % Fe, 22 Mt reserves), Ørtvann (17.6 Mt with 33 % Fe, 26 Mt reserves). In addition is Ørtfjell Øst an important deposit, which has not been exploited (33 Mt reserves with 33.6 % Fe). Altogether c. 100 Mt of iron ore, grading 33-37 % Fe, has been produced during the last 100 years. The immediate host rocks of the mineralisation are mica schists of various types, but the schists themselves occur in a sequence dominated by dolomitic and calcitic marble units several hundred metres thick. Two main ore horizons, from a few metres to 30 m thick, are found: 1) an upper magnetite-hematite ore, containing 0.15–0.3 % P, and 2) a lower apatite-bearing magnetite ore containing 0.8–1 % P. Each unit contains several ore bodies, the most important ones belonging to the upper unit. These include the Ørtfjell deposit, by far the largest in the district, which includes the Kvannevann mine, currently producing roughly 2.1 Mt/a. The total tonnage of the ore body is 417 Mt with 34 % Fe. The mt:hm ratio averages 2:1 at Ørtfjell, but ranges down to 1:10 in other deposits within the upper unit. Where hematite is dominant the gangue minerals are quartz, calcite, epidote and biotite, and where magnetite is dominant the gangue minerals are quartz, calcite, biotite, hornblende and grunerite. Bands of pyrrhotite up to 1 m thick are found at the margins of the ores and minor amounts of pyrite are common. The upper unit is also enriched in manganese, commonly containing 5–10 % MnO.
