The Feragen chromium ore field is associated with the large bodies of ultramafic rocks, mainly altered to serpentinites, located to the SE of Røros. The main rock types are variably serpentinized dunite and peridotite (cpx-bearing harzburgite to cpx-poor lherzolite). Cr-ores int the form of chromite are exclusively hosted in the dunite. Typical podiform ores predominate, though semi-stratiform ore bodies are also present. Ore-types include fine-grained impregnations, banded and semimassive/massive (> 55% Cr-oxide) types. Generally the chromite-ores have low PGE values (0.1-0.2 ppm), except the Osthammeren deposit, which has an average grade of 1.5 ppm total PGE. Between 1820 and 1940 27 500 – 32 500 t of chromium ore was produced from mainly three mines (Leigh, Ler and Skal mines). |
