Hovedgruva ligger ytterst på et nes ved Straumsfjorden med grei adkomst over gården Skipnes sin utmark. 1907: innbydelse til aksjetegning, malmbergninger i 1913 og 1916 1918-1919: oppfaringsarbeid av svensk selskap ned til 30-40 m's dyp, ingen utskipning- I følge bergverksstatistikken; Norges Bergverksdrift ble det tatt ut ca. 2.000 tonn jernmalm i denne perioden. 1937: drift i 5 mnd. av et engelsk selskap I følge Bergarkiv rapportene er det sterkt varierende beregninger om forekomstens størrelse, fra 40.000 t til 7 mill.t. hvis alle forekomstene i området taes med (Skipnesskaget, Indre Skipnes, Trangotten og Bjørkeskogen). Skipnesskaget virker klart størst selv om det er umulig å beregne mengder da malmen ikke er blottet der i dag (1993). Skipnes indre består av et lite brudd (1x6 m) 6 m over flomålet. Malmen består av fink magnetitt med varierende sulfidinnhold og varierende mengde feltspat og mafiske mineraler; epidot, amfibol og pyroksen. Sidebergartene består av finkornete, felsiske gneisser og amfibolitter kan representere metavulkanitter. |
