The Grågalten mine consists of a ca. 20 m long and up to 7-8 m wide open pit and a connecting shaft to the north of the pit. Both are filled with water to a depth of ca. 15 m below the surface. The pit is estimated to be about 28 m deep. The ore zone was worked for up to 68 m in length in the upper part. An adit 76 m long from the south-east leads into the mine. This adit was finished during investigations in 1941. About 60 m to the north of the main workings is another shaft, but this is only 6 m deep. There are two very small prospects 60 m NW and 80 m SW of the main workings. The mineralisation is located at the contact between a large gabbroic (noritic) body and banded, felsic gneisses. The contact is exposed in the inner part of the adit leading into the main open pit.

The adit is 76 m in length, leading into the main pit from SE. It has been worked through mainly quartz-rich gneisses with a few thin zones of micaceous schist. About 4 m to the south of the pit hornblende-bearing altered gabbro is exposed. Thus the ore zone is located close to, and partly at the contact between the gabbro and gneiss.

A shaft 7x7 m in outline, fileld with water. Accoring to reports it is 6 m deep. Probably it has been worked along the same ore zone as the main pit. The wallrock exposed is gabbroic. Cobbles at the dump consist of very rich disseminations of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite in a matrix rich in amphibole (sample K17-7).

This small and shallow pit must be on a parallel ore zone to the main zone. The ore is very irregular and variable, consisting of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in quartz-amphibole matrix, generally banded and foliated (sample K17-8).
