The Gállojávri intrusion is located approximately 20 km N-NNV of Karasjok and 3.5 km east of the Karasjok-Lakselv highway at Iddjajavri (Nattvann). It is conveniently accessible by boat from the road because Iddjajavri is connected to the Gieddeluobbal lake in the south (there is no wading possibility between the lakes). The Gállojávri intrusion was thoroughly investigated from 1976 to 1982 by the A/S Sydvaranger prospecting division (later ASPRO) under the leadership of Bernt Røsholt. Geochemical samples were taken, various geophysics were measured, core drillings were done, geological mapping was done both in the immediate area and more regionally, and mineralogical investigations were conducted on sulphide mineralized samples. The Norwegian Geological Survey visited the intrusion in 1987 and 1988 as part of a more regional investigation of the Karasjok greenstone belt's mafic and ultramafic intrusions. Chip samples were taken for XRF plus PGE+Au analysis, and a large sulphide-mineralized sample (30-40 kg) was taken to separate sulphides and determine the content and occurrence of precious metals. The intrusion is approximately 5 km long and reaches a maximum thickness of 500 m in the north, thinning out to the south. A weak sulphide mineralization has been found in drill holes in the north (hole 3), along the eastern boundary zone (holes 5 and 7), and along the southern extension of an N-S trend that runs across the largest island in Gállojávri (holes 1Ø, 1V, 2, 2B and 2C). Furthermore, sulphide-rich sections are located on the surface in the NØ portion of the intrusion. The host rock for the mineralization is a variably altered peridotite and pyroxenite. The mineralization occurs as fine-grained disseminations to more spotty, medium-grained disseminations. Occasionally the mineralization is modified with accumulations along tremolite-carbonate veins. Two loose rock samples of meta-olivine cumulates in the Gállojávri area had average concentrations of 2.5 ppm platinum (Pt) + palladium (Pd) + gold (Au), with a Pt-Pd ratio of approximately 1:1. As a result, a geophysical survey of the intrusion was initiated. Tertiary Minerals, which explored the occurrence in 2002-2003, drilled three cores in the occurrence based on IP and Mag. The drilling campaign did not encounter PGE concentrations that can be compared to previous surface sampling, but PGE enrichments were identified in all three holes - broad intervals of abnormal values in composite samples (e.g. 4m at 0.26 ppm Pt+Pd+Au) and higher values in narrow sections (e.g. 0.55 m at 0.69 ppm Pt+Pd+Au; Bradley, 2003). The results did not lead to further investigations, but the occurrence has later been explored by Anglo American plc., SNSG, and EMX. Bulk concentrations show that the Gállojávri intrusion is sulphur-poor, with Cu/Pd ratios ranging from depleted to primitive mantle and sulphur isotopes (d34S) overlapping with mantle values. The bulk chemistry indicates that unmineralized samples are enriched in chalcophile elements compared to mantle background values. Ore mineralogy High PGE and Au concentrations have been found in the least magnetic heavy mineral concentrate obtained by separating a 30-40 kg sample (maximum 2.3 ppm Pt, 23 ppm Pd, and 9.9 ppm Au). In the Au-richest (and simultaneously Pt- and Pd-rich) fraction (9.9 ppm Au), there was several percent arsenopyrite which is probably the host phase for most of the gold ("invisible gold"). However, free gold (Hagen 1980) and electrum were also found in the concentrate. The Gállojávri PGE mineralization occurs as uneven sulphide dissemination in various places throughout the intrusion. These disseminations can define up to about 20 m thick intervals in cores. Most of the magmatic rocks and country rocks are sulphur-poor with bulk concentrations below 1% sulphur. In the olivine- and pyroxene-dominated cumulates, the accessory sulphides are dominated by composite grains (<1mm) of pyrrhotite and pentlandite, with lesser chalcopyrite. The sulphides are usually interstitial to cumulus olivine or a combination of cumulus pyroxene and olivine. In the latter case, the composite grains are typically surrounded by plagioclase and phlogopite. In contrast, sulphides that are interstitial to cumulus olivine alone occur without refractory silicate phases. The alteration, such as serpentinization of olivine, is often associated with sulphide minerals, which may suggest local remobilization. The primary magmatic sulphide mineralogy (pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and lesser chalcopyrite) is usually preserved. With more extensive alteration, these minerals are replaced with chalcocite and bornite. The overlying gabbro consists of sulphides of pyrrhotite followed by chalcopyrite, cobalt-rich pentlandite and idiomorphic pyrite. Fe-Ti oxides often occur along the edges of composite sulphide grains, likely related to sulphur loss. Composite grains of chalcopyrite and secondary pyrite are also common in the gabbro. The most mineralized intervals contain up to 10 modal % sulphides, either as a disseminated in mm to cm scale or as larger sulphide globules of about 3-9 mm. Massive sulphides occur in a thin zone (about 5cm) consisting of about 90 modal% pyrrhotite and 10 modal% chalcopyrite and occur close to a xenolithic block identified in core. Late hydrothermal veins (cm-scale) contain remobilized sulphides and occur in drill cores at multiple levels. The silicate mineralogy of the veins is either dominated by hydrous minerals such as chlorite or amphibole and typically contains varying amounts of carbonates. Some veins are dominated by quartz with smaller amounts of amphibole and/or mica. The sulphide mineralogy varies depending on vein type. In chlorite-dominated veins, the sulphides are dominated by pyrrhotite, followed by chalcopyrite, with minor pentlandite, while in amphibole-dominated veins, pyrrhotite remains the main phase, but pentlandite dominates over chalcopyrite. Pentlandite dominates over sphalerite in quartz-rich veins, with minor pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Ore petrographic study revealed several precious metal phases occurring as tellurides, sulfarsenides and Au-Ag alloys that are associated with the sulphide minerals. Most platinum-group minerals (PGM) are found as allotriomorphic to hypidiomorphic inclusions in magmatic and recrystallized sulphides and are dominated by merenskyite ((Pd, Pt)(Te, Bi)2) with a minor amount of michenerite (PdBiTe). Irarsite ((Ir, Rh, Pt)AsS) is a rare phase in the Gállojávri intrusion, but it is usually hypidiomorphic to idiomorphic, unlike other PGM. Pyrrhotite is usually without PGM inclusions. Platinum- and Pd-rich melonite is the dominant telluride phase in samples with lower bulk concentrations of PGE. A few PGM can be found as silicate inclusions. Unlike PGM included in sulphides, PGM in silicates are typically hypidiomorphic to idiomorphic and consist of minerals where Pt dominates over Pd, such as moncheite ((Pt, Pd)(Te, Bi)2). Despite being included in silicates, they are usually found close to sulfides. Some accessory PGM, hessite, and Au-Ag alloys have been found in thin, chalcopyrite-dominated veins.
