Rødberg-ultramafitten ligger innerst i Kjosen, på Lyngenhalvøya. Forekomsten har en meget gunstig beliggenhet rett i sjøkanten. Den består av lagdelt peridotitt med soner av dunitt og wehrlitt i veksling som stryker N-S. Den generelle serpentiniseringsgraden er omtrent 30%. Kromittinnholdet er ca. 2%. Olivin har et MgO-innhold som tilsvarer Fo 88. Friske partier er grovkornet, men er gjennomsatt av finkornete serpentiniserte årer. Forekomsten har en del ganske store kromittårer. Det er også en skjærsone som kutter kroppen. Forekomsten er undersøkt av Grenne (1988) med henblikk på edelmetallforekomster.

Abstract:
Det er foretatt natursteinsundersøkelser i Troms i forbindelse med gjennomføringen av det geologiske fylkesprogrammet. Dette er et flerårig samarbeidsprosjekt mellom NGU og Troms Fylkeskommune som skal gi en oversikt over geologien i fylket, deriblant de mineralske ressurser. Natursteinsundersøkelsene har i denne omgang omfattet forekomster av skifer og ultramafiske bergarter, steintyper som tradisjonelt har vært og fortsatt er av viktighet innen fylket. Undersøkte objekter ble utvalgt med bakgrunn i materiale fra tidligere arbeid og dagens etterspørsel i natursteinsmarkedet, samt ut fra forslag fra industrien. Disse omfattet lys skifer ved Svartnes, flere brudd antatt tilhørende samme skifersone i Reisadalen, og de ultramafiske forekomstene Grunnes, Rødberg, Lavika og Finnhaugen. For Svartnes-skiferen indikerer resultatene at den utnyttbare delen av forekomsten utgjør en begrenset ressurs og neppe kan drives som en selvstendig enhet. Den lyse spalteflaten er imidlertid etterspurt i markedet og det er mulig at denne skiferen kan drives som et supplement til en annen skiferdrift og gi et nyttig tilskudd til varespekteret. Forekomstene Holmbo, Sappen og Tjuvdalen i Reisadalen tilhører en skifersone vi anser å ha et forholdsvis stort potensiale. Ut fra sonens store utstrekning, observerte mektigheter og kvalitet kan det være muligheter for lønnsom drift, spesielt for veinære deler av sonen. Den gode skiferkvaliteten kan nå opp i 9 m tykkelse, og total mektighet kan økes ytterligere dersom den marginale skiferkvaliteten kan utnyttes. Ingen av de befart ultramafiske forekomstene, forutenom Grunnes som er i produksjon, synes egnet for natursteinsdrift. Rødberg-forekomsten er stor og kan virke interessant, men beliggenheten er ugunstig og blokkstørrelsen synes utilstrekkelig i forhold til forventet prisnivå på steinen.
