Examples
Products Most of the olivine extracted today is used as utilities in the production of steel. However, the field of application for olivine is increasing. Special products containing olivine are continuously being developed. These products naturally pay more than the standard products, but the development costs are probably equally high. The introduction of special products also require significant investments in the processing plant. In the short term it is therefore probably not feasable for a newly established business to invest in special products. On a medium to long term basis (3-5 years) it is important to prepare for the pre-production and delivery of more processed goods. The planning for the processing plant is based on the production of olivine with a grain size distribution corresponding to the requirements of the steelworks. Production is planned for the following fractions: 0 - ?mm 2 - 6mm 10 - 30mm

Information about the deposit can be found on internet at www.steinsvikolivin.no Deposit The deposit is situated approximately 2 km from the sea on the eastern side of Vassbakkedalen above Steinsvik in Dalsfjord. The deposit is lense-shaped, appearing in the side of the valley by Støylen. The olivine in Vassbakkedalen occurs in the same geological area as the considerable deposits at Åheim and in Bjørkedalen. Analysis performed on core samples, suggests a quality corresponding to the large scale production performed by Olivin AS at Åheim. Several reports have been written to investigate the shape, volume and quality of the deposit. Merete Bjørdal 1994 Outline and description of deposit (of olivine) based on field research and general geological survey of the area. NGU 1996 Laboratory analysis of core samples. Olivine that can be extracted is estimated to be at least km3 (Prospektering AS). The estimate is conservative and is most likely to be exceeded after a more thoruogh investigation. The uncertainty concerning the estimates are related to the quality of the olivine in the transition zone to the other rock types. Chemical composition MgO 47,00% SiO2 42,00% Fe2O3 7.00% Al2O3 0,60% CaO 0,20% MnO 0,10% TiO2 0,10% Na2O < 0,10% K2O < 0,01% P2O5 < 0,01% The tests from the field analysis shows the deposit to be of very uniform quality and well suited to the most common products that olivine is used for today. The analysis has been performed on both surface and core samples. The amount of MgO, an important parameter, ranges from 46,5% to 49%. The ignition loss ranges from 0,5% to 2,5%. A complete field analysis has been performed by NGU (Norges geologiske undersøkelse - Norwegian Geological Survey). Core samples have been taken from three bore holes of approximately 150 meters total length. Location, depth and direction of each hole is described in a separate report. Before an operation can begin, a program of systematic test drilling must be completed. The purpose of the drilling is to clearly outline the limits of each rock type so that the commercial volume can be estimated more clearly, in order to plan a rational operation. A plan for such a systematic test drilling suggests that core samples of between 800 to 1000 meter will give adequate information for future planning and operation. Svein Parr 1996 Report - analysis and assessment of core samples Prospektering AS 1997 Geological mapping and evaluation of future operation. The volume and shape of the deposit is vital to the commercial operation. Both geologist Svein Parr and Prospektering AS have made rough estimates with respect to volumes and recoverable quantities. The total volume is estimated by Parr to be 25 mill m3.
