Abstract:

The structural development of the Kalak Nappe Complex of Eastern and Central Porsangerhalvøya, Finnmark, Norway.
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;NGU Bulletin; No.400;67-87 pages
Abstract:
Lithological and structural mapping of Porsangerhalvøya has revealed eight major thrust units within the Kalak Nappe Complex. Five deformation phases have been recognised: D1 produced a foliation preserved within garnet pophyroblasts which grew during prograde metamorphism. Peak metamorphism occurred during D2 and culminated in upper amphibolite facies in the higher nappes and uppermost greenschist facies in the lower nappes. Staurolite porphyroblasts, pseudomorphed first by muscovite and then by kyanite also developed during prograde metamorphism between D1 and D2. D2 formed tight to isoclinal recumbent folds with an associated axial planar regional schistosity (S2) and mineral lineation as well as boudinage structures. D3 and D4 represent less ductile deformations, with associated retrograde staurolite, chloritoid, garnet and biotite porphyroblastesis. Thrusting, initiated as a ductile process during D2, continued into D4 with a decreasing ductile component, producing major nappe translations and an inverted metamorphic sequence. The metamorphism and associated deformation and thrusting is thought to have occurred during the late Cambrian to earliest Ordovician Finnmarkian orogenic event.
