Storviknesformasjonen i området sør for Melsvik består av en ca. 100 m mektig grå til grønn siltstein med 5 tynne, 0.3 - 5 m mektige, dolomittlag. Flere av disse er kobber-mineralisert over en strøklengde på minst 3 km. Mineraliseringen ble funnet ved oppfølging av en geokjemisk bekkesedimentanomali (Næss og Staw 1979), og det er ikke gjort røskingsarbeider av noe slag i området. Anomalien strekker seg helt fra sjøen ved Melsvik og sørover i retning Møllnesvatnet. Disseminerte kobbersulfider opptrer i basislagene i dolomitten. Noe svovelkis finnes særlig i den grønnlige siltsteinen like under dolomitten. Sulfidparagenesen utgjøres vesentlig av tett sammenvokst bornitt og digenitt, og i den sørlige delen synes kobberkis å dominere. Hovedskjerpet: I skaret ned fra "500-vatnet" er det i høyde 390 - 365 m.o.h. er det 5 parallelle, 2 - 5 m mektige dolomittlag med noe kobberkis og litt svovelkis som disseminasjon og i årer (prøve 01 fra det nest øverste laget). Kobberkis sitter i både finkornig dolomitt og i gangsverm av kvarts (få cm mektige, stedvis bergkrystaller) i dolomitt. Det er mer eller mindre kobberkis i alle 5 lag. De mineraliserte dolomittlagene forløper nordover gjennom "skjerp 1" og "skjerp 2" ned mot sjøen ved Melsvik.

Abstract:
Det er tatt 449 bekkesedimentprøver i Alta-Kvænangenvinduet på kartbladene Alta, Gargia og Talvik. Prøvene er analysert på kobber, sink, bly, nikkel, molybden, kobolt, litium, sølv, mangan og jern. Det er påvist en rekke høye konsentrasjoner av kobber, sink, bly, nikkel, kobolt, mangan og jern. De høye analyseverdiene er med få unntak knyttet til Kvenvikgrønnsteinens bergarter.
