The iron formations at Seljeli can be studied along road-cuts along the road from Elsfjord to the Seljeli dolomite quarry, in small pits on top of the quarry and along old overgrown trenches east of the quarry. A nearly 200 m long and up to 1.5 m deep, heavily overgrown trench are found in a steep, forested hill east of the dolomite quarry. According to locals, the trenching was conducted around 50 years ago. In the central part of the trench banded, massive hematite+magnetite ore, which also shows intense folding, occurs (Figure 10, Samples JS_FE1720-21). Due to the overgrowing it is hard to determine the thickness of the IF without substantial works. Both in this trench and in minor trenches in the same area magnetite dissemination in amphibolitic rocks are found (Sample JS_FE1719). |

Abstract: | |

Abstract: | |

The iron formations at Seljeli can be studied along road-cuts along the road from Elsfjord to the Seljeli dolomite quarry, in small pits on top of the quarry and along old overgrown trenches east of the quarry. Two horizons of IF are found in the road-cuts along the road from Elsfjord to the Seljeli dolomite quarry. The southern horizon consists of a 8 m thick layer of banded, calcareous amphibole-mica schist with disseminated magnetite+hematite and accessory iron sulphides (Sample JS_FE1716). Staurolite-garnet-mica schist dominates on both sides, but a minor, 1.5 m thick bed of pinkish marble occurs at the foot-wall of the IF (bedding 320°/65°). |

This trench is probably performed for mapping of the exploitable dolomite and shows that the IF occurs in close contact to the pure dolomite. |

Magnetite disseminated, calcareous amphibolite was also found at Middagshaugen 700 m E of the major trench (Sample JS_FE1722). A minor outcrop with calcareous schist that resembles diamictite was observed in between this localities in an area with only few outcrops. |
