The Rallkattmalmen deposit is one out of several iron ore deposits in the Vefsn metallogenic area. It is likely that the ores and their host rocks, represent a continuation of those in Dunderlandsdalen. The ores in the Vefsn district are exclusively magnetite-haematite ores, containing only 0.15 – 0.3 % P. Most of the occurrences are in a sequence of mica schists, garnetiferous below the ores, and actinolite-carbonate-bearing above, the schists themselves occurring in a sequence dominated by dolomitic and calcitic marbles. The three most important deposits in the area are Fuglestrand, with resources of >13 Mt, Rallkatt with 19 Mt and Seljeli with 30 Mt of potential ore. Fuglestrand contains 37 %, Rallkatt 30 % and Seljeli 19 % Fetot. The content of P is <0.3 % in all three. Magnetite is the predominant ore mineral at Fuglestrand, with lesser haematite; the reverse is the case at Seljeli and at Rallkatt the amounts are about equal. The dominant gangue minerals at Fuglestrand and Rallkatt are quartz, amphibole, epidote and calcite, and at Seljeli quartz, calcite, amphibole, biotite, chlorite and epidote. The iron formation is exposed over a width of around 200 m at the Kanglitinden where the location for the Rallkatt deposit is registered. The width might be due to repetition caused by folding, but it is hard to clarify as the sequence is intruded by numerous felsic (granitic to tonalitic) dykes). Both hematite and magnetite are enriched in bands with thicknesses from a few mm to few dm (Samples JS_FE1713-14). Weaker dissemination of Fe-oxide occurs in epidote-amphibole-carbonate rich bands in-between the enriched Fe-oxide bands. |

The iron formation is around 15 m thick NNE of Prøvepunkt 4 and a relatively hematite-rich sample was collected closer to the Kanglitinden (Sample JS_FE1712). |

The section observed at Skravlåga can be followed further NNE up on Flatafjellet og Kanglitinden. Tectonostratigraphically in the bottom (in W) occurs dolomitic schist/diamictite with foliation 35°/80° overlain by iron formation, which locally is in contact with amphibolite. At the top (in E) exists (staurolite)-garnet-mica schist. Only few, scattered dolomite clasts occur in the calcareous schist similar to the diamictite sequence by the river. Locally, cm-thin bands of magnetite are also found weithin this unit. The iron formation is 2 to 10 m thick and consists of finely banded magnetite-hematite ore (Sample JS_FE17011). |
