The Nygruva deposit on Varaldsøy was probably discovered around 1865, and 300 tonnes of ore was produced from an adit in the eastern part of the deposit. Regular mining continued then in 1916-1919 with production of 5600 t of ore. The proven resources are in the order of 30 000 t. The deposit is situated along the contact between metabasalt or tuff and minor bodies of feldspar porphyric rhyodacite. The ore body is a ruler with a thickness of 1-3 m, and has been worked for a length of c. 260 m and followed along strike for 310 m. It is a fine-grained pyritic banded ore with minor amounts of sphalerite, chalcopyrite and magnetite. Main gangue is quartz. Average grades are 47.2 % S, 40.9 % Fe, 0.68 % Cu, 3.40 % Zn, 0.05 % Pb, 0.013 % As og 0.0036 % Se. Three analyses show between 0.3 and 1.3 ppm Au.

Rapport over Varaldsøy Gruber og malmstrøket Varaldsøy - Nygruben - Hisdalen.
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;FAGRAPPORT;Bergarkivet; No.BA 6308;8+kart pages
Abstract:
Rapporten oppsummerer geologiske forhold, geologiske resultater og malmberegninger. Feltet omtales som forholdsvis lovende m.h.p. drift i liten skala. Forekomstnr. 20082, 20287 og 20290. Forekomstens navn og koordinater: Nygruva 32 3330 66708, Varaldsøy, Hisdalen 32 3309 66699. Valaheia 32 3345 66717.

Egge, A.
Nygruben.
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;FAGRAPPORT;Bergarkivet; No.BA 1869;4 pages
Abstract:

;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;NGU; No.147;1-106 pages
Abstract:
When Steinar Foslie suddenly passed away in november 1951, he had finished the geological map here presented: "Kisdistriktet Varaldsøy-Ølve i Hardanger", based on field-work during 1942-49. Furthermore his M.S. contained a thorough petrological description of the rocks (p. 1f.) and the history of the copper-mining in the Ølve-district "Christiansgaves (Lilledale) kobberverk" from the two periods 1642-73 and 1759-85, holding a lot of items based on the study of records (p. 55 f.). These M.S. are printed unaltered, introduced by the author's own preface. The paper as a whole must be looked on as a basic draft only: An obviously planned section treating the ore deposits and their mineralogy has not been worked out, yet the facts presented may throw light upon general problems connected with the pyrite-deposits of Norway. As appears from the map the predominant rock in the pyrite-district is greenstone, more or less schistose. The term "greenstone" is here used for basic lavas and tuffs only, while the designation "the greenstone formation" is used by Foslie in the same sense as for the widely extended pyrite-bearing group in the Trondheim-district.

Varaldsø kisgruber.
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;FAGRAPPORT;Bergarkivet; No.BA 959;107 pages
Abstract:
Lok.

;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;FAGRAPPORT;NGU-rapport; No.96.139;100 pages
Abstract:

Foslie, Steinar , 1926
Norges svovelkisforekomster.
;Norges geologiske undersøkelse;TIDSSKRIFTARTIKKEL;NGU; No.127;122 pages
Abstract:
This paper was written in English for the XIV International Geological Congress, Madrid 1926, as a part of its monograph on the Pyrite Resources of the World. The present Norwegian edition has nearly the same content. However, the geological review is a little more extensive, the production statistics have been carried a year forward, to the end of 1925, and some more illustrations are given. The English reader is referred to monograph of the Congress, as only a short statement of the contents is given here. On page 7-13 will be found a short account of the relation of pyrite deposits to the Caledonian mountain chain in Norway. The author maintains, that the main part of its intrusives, and with them the pyrite deposits, belong to the first period of folding processes of the Norwegian mountain chain, probably of Lower Ordovician age. On page 13-18, the characteristic features of the Norwegian pyrite deposits are described, and a summary of the recent views concerning their geology is given. According to these, a small group of pyrite deposits are bio-chemical sediments between basaltic, submarine lava beds, the greatest part of them are magmatic differentiates from gabbroidal intrusives, and a last group are hydromagmatic or hydrothermal deposits.
