Abstract:
In the present paper the author treats the geology of some deposits of nickelferous pyrrhotite in archean west of the Oslofjord in southern Norway. The deposits, which have been known for a long time, and have been subject to considerable mining operations, are situated shortly west of the fault, which separates the archean region in the west from the unmetamorphosed palaeozoic sedimentary and eruptive rocks of the "Oslo field" in the east. The archean rocks of the district have not up to the present time been adequately mapped or investigated, and the map accompanying this paper is the first result of a detailed mapping in the district. The region is considered to belong to the northern extremity of the so-called "Bamble formation", a complex of archean rocks, which has long ago been given this separate name on account of its containing unquestionable sedimentary rocks, such as quartzite, cordierite- and silimanite gneisses.
