The Søndre Geitryggen deposit was in the earliest periods 1770-1848 and 1860-1878 mined for copper in the eastern part of the deposit where the copper grades were the highest (stringer zone), while copper, zinc and pyrite were mined in the western zinc-dominated part in the last mining period (1952-1965). In total c. 0.5 Mt of ore grading 0.8 % Cu, 2.4 % Zn was taken out, and the mine had a strike length of 400 m and a vertical depth of 165 m. Mining ended because workers were needed in the new, large mine at Tverrfjellet, not because the deposit was mined out. The deposit is situated in the upper parts of a 20-50 m rhyodacite lens, in contact with overlying tuffitic schists. The main massive ore is a banded pyrite-sphalerite ore.

Abstract:
Malmforekomstene tilhører det kjente Tronheimsfelt og er knyttet til bergarter som er vanlig ved Trondheimsfeltets kisgruver. Natrongranitt (Trondheimitt), gabbrobergarter og amfibolitt forekomer i de vanlige Skifrene av Trondheimstypen, og kisforekomstene er utskilt langs granitt -og amfibolittgrensene på lingnende måte, som man kjenner det fra andre felter. Som særpreget for Folldalsgruvene kan bemerkes: 1. - Malmens kvalitet er relativt god. 2. - Kisen forekommer i linser av en annen form og størrelse samt opptreden enn ved de fleste andre gruver i Trondheimsfeltet. Først i de senere år har gruvedriften vært ført så langt frem at man har kunnet øyne en lovmessighet ved malmlinsenes opptreden. SØLV OG GULL forekommer i større mengder i kobberkisen fra Folldals Verks gruver enn ved andre norske kisgruver. Rent kobber oppgis å holde 25 gr. gull og 1 500 gr. sølv pr. tonn. Av foranstående fremstilling fremgår det at det i gruvene er oppfart malm for 7 års drift, når det regnes med en produksjon av 60 000 t. råmalm. Enn videre fremgår at det er gode muligheter for å finne mer malm enn den som nå er påvist.

Abstract:
Frie emneord: Lagdelt, Malmgenese Five strata-bound massive sulphide deposits are situated at three different stratigraphic levels in the volcanogenic Fundsjø group in the Folldal area. The deposits are hosted in metabasalts, metarhyodacites and volcanoclastic rocks and belong to the Cu-Zn class of volcanic-associated massive sulphide deposits. The metal content of the deposits indicates that the sources of metals are underlying strata, possibly with a contribution from intrusives. Wall rock alteration varies according to differences in host rocks, and is probably a result of chemical variations of the host rocks, temperature differences and proximity to the hydrothermal vent. The clustering of deposits in the Folldal area is considered to be due to the occurrence of a large sub- volcanic trondhjemitic intrusion which acted as the major heat engine for convection. The small size of the deposits might be related to the shallow level of the intrusion.

Befaringsrapport for gruvene Nordre og Søndre Gjeiteryggen og Grev Moltke Gruve. Det fremgår av ovenstående utredning at gruvene er drevet på kislinjaler og linser. De enkelte kislinjalene er i forhold til andre kislinjaler i Tronheimsdistriktet av relativt liten utstrekning; men ved vellykkete skjerpningsarbeider i dagen og i gruvene har man stadig funnet nye linser og linjaler når de gamle er utdrevet. Gruvedriften blir på denne måten kostbar, da de nye forekomster stadig drar seg bort fra de gamle sjakter.

Oppgaven gikk ut på å bestemme overdekkets mektighet på et sted hvor Folldal Verk A/S var i ferd med å føre en stigort fra en grubegang frem i dagen. Det ble utført seismiske refraksjonsmålinger langs et profil av ca. 120 meter lengde. Målingene tyder på at overdekkets mektighet varierer mellom 6 og 10 meter.

Lite er kjent om driften i Juliane Marie, som er en av de to østlige gruvene i Søndre Geitryggen. Den var i drift i perioden 1770-1780, på samme tid som nabogruva Godthaab. Driften var beskjeden og gruva er kun drevet ned til et dyp av 30 m under dagen og horisontalt 75 m, så antakelig var det kun drift i denne perioden. Det ble i en senere periode laget et gjennomslag mellom de to gruvene, sannsynligvis en gang i perioden 1829 til 1845, da Røros Kobberverk drev Godthaab. I den siste driftsperioden i Oluf Olsen ble det også drevet en stoll fra denne inn i Juliane Marie. I dag er alle åpninger inn i Juliane Marie gjenfylt, og det er ingenting å se. Malmen i Juliane Marie bestod som i Godthaab av slirer, årer og linser av kobberkis-magnetkis i kvarts-klorittskifer og representerte tilførselsonen til forekomsten i Søndre Geitryggen.

The stratabound sulphide deposits in the Folldal area, Southern Trondheim Region, Norway

Abstract:
Frie emneord: Lagdelt, Malmgenese Five strata-bound massive sulphide deposits are situated at three different stratigraphic levels in the volcanogenic Fundsjø group in the Folldal area. The deposits are hosted in metabasalts, metarhyodacites and volcanoclastic rocks and belong to the Cu-Zn class of volcanic-associated massive sulphide deposits. The metal content of the deposits indicates that the sources of metals are underlying strata, possibly with a contribution from intrusives. Wall rock alteration varies according to differences in host rocks, and is probably a result of chemical variations of the host rocks, temperature differences and proximity to the hydrothermal vent. The clustering of deposits in the Folldal area is considered to be due to the occurrence of a large sub- volcanic trondhjemitic intrusion which acted as the major heat engine for convection. The small size of the deposits might be related to the shallow level of the intrusion.

Godthaab representerer sammen med Juliane Marie de østlige gruvene på Søndre Geitryggen forekomsten. Disse gruvene var først i drift i perioden 1770-1780 under Fredriks Gaves verk og det ble også drevet et gjennomslag mellom disse. Røros Kobberverk tok opp drift på Godthaab i 1829 og drev antakelig gruva fram til nedleggelsen i 1848. I denne perioden ble det drevet inn en grunnstoll som kom inn på malmnivået på 30 meters dyp. Imidlertid var malmen av dårlig kvalitet, kvartsrik og tungt smeltelig. Selskapet som startet opp igjen i 1906, the Folldal Copper and Sulphur ltd., lenset gruva, men fant fort ut at det ikke var noen malm å drive på. I dag er alle gruveåpninger gjenfylt med unntak av de ytre 50-60 meter av grunnstollen. Det er således ingenting å se av mineraliseringer. Sjakten i Godthaab som ble anlagt i den første driftsperioden gikk til et dyp på 50 meter og det totale oppfarte felt under begge driftsperioder utgjorde ca. 90 meter i utstrekning. Malmen i Godthaab bestod som i Juliane Marie av slirer, årer og linser av kobberkis-magnetkis mineralisering i kvarts-klorittskifer og representerte tilførselsonen til forekomsten i Søndre Geitryggen.

Gjenfylt sjakt i furuskogen vest for Oluf Olsen. Denne var etter alt å dømme anlagt i den siste driftsperioden, dvs. 1952-1965. Lite mineralisering å se på tipphaugen, det som finnes er båndet pyrittimpregnasjon med mindre mengder kobberkis i kvarts-sericittskifer. Det er ellers ingen blotninger i området.

Dette skjerpet ligger i skogen øst for Søndre Geitryggen. Det har ingen tilknytning til mineraliseringen i Søndre. Mineraliseringen er tilknyttet en grafittskiferhorisont og er en primær sulfidanrikning i tilknytning til denne. Skjerpet er en gjenfylt grop, sannsynligvis med omriss på 5x3 meter. Tippvolumet har minst vært 100 kbm. Mineraliseringen består av slirer med magnetkis og litt kobberkis i grafittskifer. I skiferen opptrer det bånd og slirer anriket i fibrig klinoamfibol, som kan være gruneritt og/eller aktinolitt.

Skjerpet ligger i skogen øst for Søndre Geitryggen og består av et lite innhugg i en skrent, ca 7x2 m i utstrekning og inntil 1 m dypt. Mineraliseringen er slirer med magnetkis i dels meget ren grafittmatriks, dels sammen med en del kvarts og nåler av klinoamfibol. Mineraliseringen har ingen tilknytning til Søndre Geitryggen forekomsten, men er en primær anrikning i grafittskiferen.
