The Bjørnevatn Banded Iron Formation represents the largest accumulation of BIF ores in the Sør-Varanger province. The ore field was first discovered by the commissioner of mines Tellef Dahll in 1865 (Dahll 1891), but exploration of the ore field started nearly forty years later in 1906. Full scale mining commenced in 1910 by A/S Sydvaranger and continued until 1997. During this period open pit and subordinate under-ground mining gave a total production of over 200 Mt of crude ores with about 30 wt % Fe (magnetic). In 2009 Sydvaranger Gruve AS reopened the deposit and are presently mining two of the ore bodies (Hyttmalmen, Kjellmannåsen) with proven ore reserves of 20 Mt containing 34 wt % Fe (total). However, the company has defined 10 different ore bodies for future mining with total reserves (proven+indicated+ inferred) of 449 Mt with 31 wt % Fe (total). The ore bodies are part of the Bjørnevass Group which comprises formations composed dominantly of siliceous gneisses and quartzites, meta-conglomerates, mica schists and mafic to intermediate metavolcanites with BIF horizons. The latter lithologies constitute the Fisketind formation which contains two levels of BIFs being interlayered with and separated by sequences of magnetite-rich amphibolites, locally with pillow structures, as well as hornblende gneisses and quartz-biotite gneisses. The ore bodies of the upper BIF level have been the main target for open pit mining both in the past and presently. The shape of the ore bodies are the ultimate result of three phases of isoclinal to tight folding. In the northern part of the mining field the distribution of ores is governed by a moderate SE-plunging synform overturned towards the west. They may reach a thickness of nearly 200 m and a strike-length in the range 1-5 km. The upper BIF usually contains 30-35 % Fe (magnetic) (> 50 % magnetite) and the lower 10-30 % Fe (magnetic).
