The N-S elongated Trælhaug quartzite complex, which is 6 km long and up to 1 km wide, forms a the ridge of the Trælhaug at an altitude of 1000 to 1300 m a.s.l.. There is no road access to the location. It can be reached by a 8-km walk from the village Fossli at Vøringsfossen. During a NGU field campaign in 2005 rocks were sampled along E-W-striking and 1 km long traverse in the southern part of the quartzite body (see image). The band of coarse-grained greenish-bluish quartzite at the eastern contact of the complex, which is about 100 m wide, exhibits layering due to variations of minor feldspar and muscovite (3-10 vol.%) and accessory biotite and chlorite (samples 2708502, 2708503). Blue kyanite crystals are developed at some foliation planes. Towards the complex centre the quartzite becomes more and more heterogeneous and transforms to banded, fine- to medium grained quartzitic gneisses (sample 2708504) with pegmatitic schlieren of euhedral feldspar. The gneisses are partially migmatitic. Towards the western contact of the complex the gneisses changes gradually to relative pure quartzite, which forma a 100-m wide band along the western contact (sample 2708506). The Al2O3 content of the Trælhaug quartzites is generally >1 wt.% and, therefore, they are not a suitable raw material for FeSi and MnSi production. However, the relative pure, 100-m wide quartzite band at the western contact has partially less than 0.5 wt.% Al2O3. The Ti concentration of quartz in the quartzites is high (30 to 65 ppm) which defines the quartz as low quality raw material in the micro chemical sense. Al in quartz varies between 50 and 200 ppm, Li between 0.6 and 1.5 ppm and Fe between 2 and 12 ppm. |

Abstract: | |
